Tweet Style Song Reviews

Not Much Effort

So many music reviewers babble on these days about the meaning and inspiration behind songs, so we thought we'd review some singles in the length of a tweet (140 characters or less).... here it goes. For us here, NME stands for 'Not Much Effort'. You can listen to all the tunes in our Spotify playlist HERE.

Drake: The Motto. Brashy and shit and a million miles away from what made his debut so listenable. (98 characters)

Linkin Park: Burn it Down. Linkin Park announced they didn’t want their new material to sound like their last album, they failed. (129 characters)

Nicki Minaj: Starships. On the right material Minaj can sound lethal, on the wrong material like this she can sound terrible. (125 characters)

Joker: On My Mind. Super smooth vocals with equally tight production results in a dubstep-esque track without the usual annoyances. (131 characters)

Flux Pavilion: Daydreamer. Despite Example’s highly recognisable vocals this manages to remain sounding like a FP track. (121 characters)

Kanye West & G.O.O.D Music: Mercy. Too many cooks spoil the broth. (66 characters)

Kanye West: Cold. Better than Mercy, but living up to his last solo album is looking like a mountainous task. (110 characters)

Youmeatsix: No One Does it Better. Youmeatsix have done it much better as 2 brilliant verses are brought down by a drab chorus. (127 characters)

Alabama Shakes: Hold On. Ignore the obvious shallow comparisons to The Black Keys and this is a song to be enjoyed.

Youth Lagoon: July. Haunting and subtle, it’s not going to help your mild depression though. (92 characters)

Real Estate: Easy. How summer should sound but most often doesn’t. (66 characters)

Benga: I will Never Change. Judging by this song he is right with the title, and that is fine. (94 characters)

Netsky: Moving With You. Nothing we haven’t heard before, think Sub Focus and if that is your vibe you are sure to enjoy this. (126 characters)

High Contrast: The Agony and the Ecstasy. Beautiful vocals given space to work with and are not over-powered by huge beats and synth. (133 characters)

Black Mill: City Lights. Electronic music to send you bonkers with sampling and synthesized keys. (97 characters)

Kasabian: Man of Simple Pleasures. One of the stand-out tracks from a less than spectacular album. (98 characters)

Sub Focus: Out the Blue. A terrifically catchy chorus but he can do better. (76 characters)

Lethal Bizzle: Leave it (remix). He may well be one of Grime’s fore-runners but the most notable thing here is a verse by a footballer. (135 characters)

Wiley: Boom Blast. 10 years into his career Wiley is never going to change so by now you know the formula.

Sway: Level Up. Sway has just reappeared over the past few months and he has smashed this one out the park too. (111 characters)

Emeli Sande: Heaven. She has been featuring on artists tracks for some years now and this is a perfect way to put her name in concrete. (136 characters)

Florence + The Machine: Breath of Life. A city sized chorus and another epic number of biblical proportions is what we expect by now. (133 characters)

Lana Del Rey: Blue Jeans. She is unlikely to go away in the near future but while she is doing something a bit different that is fine. (134 characters)

Lykke Li: Come Near. If pop music was still being made on the eve of the apocalypse it would probably sound like this. (118 characters)

M83: Reunion. All the fuss, for this, gosh really? (51 characters)

Jack White: Love Interruption. History suggests Jack White nails anything he puts his name on, this is history repeated. (121 characters)

Spector: Chevy Thunder. The sort of band who are far more entertaining to see at a festival than sit down and listen to. (120 characters)

Dry The River: The Chamber & The Valves. Preached about weekly by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens but this folky/gospel sound will not be for all. (138 characters)

Michael Kiwanuka: I’m Getting Ready. The Sound of 2012 winner hasn’t got a lot in his locker but if your life is over you will love this. (137 characters)

SBTRKT: Hold on. How all RnB from this day forward should sound, period. (73 characters)

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs: Tapes & Money. Electro pop, no more no less. (81 characters)

Azari & III: Reckless with your Love (Tensnake Remix). Could almost be a different song but with the same fantastic sound. (122 characters)

The 2 Bears: Work. More Electro pop you like it or you don’t, but this has a catchy chorus. (91 characters)

Jai Paul: Jasmine (Demo). More rounded than previous efforts but still totally obscure. (87 characters)

Childish Gambino: Outside. The vocals don’t keep in time with the beat but at least it’s spat with conviction. (111 characters)

Burial: Kindred. It’s hard not to connect with Burial but clocking in at 11 minutes it is maybe pushing it a bit. (114 characters)

The Animal Collective: Honeycomb. Genre hopping is what Animal Collective do but this has no genre, so maybe just listen. (121 characters)

Rita Ora: R.I.P. Tinie Tempah can do better as a guest, Rita Ora has featured on like one song so there is nothing to measure her by. (133 characters)

Damon Albarn: Apple Carts. Damon hasn’t really put a stamp on any of his work for a while now, he needs new boots. (131 characters)

Ladyhawke: Anxiety. Ladyhawke’s weird pop fusion isn’t going to score masses of number 1’s but that’s probably a good thing. (124 characters)

The Subways: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The Subways fans REALLY love The Subways, this isn’t going to change. (103 characters)

Tulisa: Young. Honestly don’t waste your time reading this concise review and certainly don’t listen to the song in question. (125 characters)

Nas: The Don. Nas goes in hard with fire, for an old guy he is doing alright. (67 characters)

Passion Pit: Take a Walk. If Optimus Prime went to a family disco, he would ask the DJ to play this. (100 characters)

Miike Snow: Devil’s Work. Radio friendly dance music but with subject matter, this track soars brilliantly. (108 characters)

The Temper Trap: Trembling Hands. Taking the atmospheric sound from their debut that little bit further. (105 characters)

Gossip: Perfect World. POWER BALLAD. (37 characters)

Skepta: Make Peace Not War. All Skepta wants to do is make one bad ass party. (77 characters)

Feeder: Children of the Sun. There is a chance you will never notice this, it is just Feeder being Feeder. (106 characters)

It's worth me saying a few of the songs are not on Spotify, and the real awful ones I took out the playlist.
